Services for Harriett Maxine Burns, 96, of Indianola, Iowa, who died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018, at Westview Care Center in Indianola, were held at 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 2, 2018, at Center Chapel United Methodist Church, west of Indianola. Visitation was held one hour prior to service. Burial will be held in the Hewitt Cemetery, rural Warren County.

Harriett Maxine Burns was born on Nov. 27, 1921, to Lawrence Powers and Zella King Powers. She grew up in Winterset, Iowa, and graduated from Winterset High School. Following high school, she completed normal training at Simpson College and began teaching in a one-room schoolhouse.

On Aug. 3, 1947, she was united in marriage to George Burns. They purchased a farm in rural Indianola (Mount Hope community) where they raised crops, livestock, three sons and one daughter. In later years, they retired from the farm and lived in Indianola.

Maxine was a longtime member of Center Chapel United Methodist Church, where she was a volunteer organist for over 50 years. In addition, she played for many weddings and funerals through the years.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Mildred, Maurice and Bob Powers; and her husband, George. She is survived by three sons, Larry (Jan) of Lucas, Mike (Diana) of West Des Moines and Bob (Kim) of Indianola; one daughter, Kathy Sides (Earl) of Rock Rapids; 10 grandchildren, Tammy (Brad) Woodhouse and Chris (Bob) Riggs, Alec and Chelsea Burns, Jeff (Kyla) Burns and Kara (Jonathan) Guzman, and Ben, Sam, Emily and Maggie Sides; and eight great-grandchildren, Mike and Maren Woodhouse, Hannah and Katelyn Riggs, Ada and Myca Burns, and Jett and Ella Guzman. Memorials may be made to Center Chapel United Methodist Church.
