COUCH, CIVIL WAR VETERAN, SUCCUMBS TO LONG ILLNESS

J. C. Couch, 84 years old, a veteran of the civil war, died yesterday afternoon at his home, 1210 East Eighth street, after a long illness.

Mr. Couch was a member of Company H, Thirty-fourth Iowa infantry, and participated in some of the most important battles of the war.

Besides his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Couch, he is survived by six children, Mrs. Mary Turk, Patterson, Mo.; Mrs. Julia Otto, Summerville, Mo.; Mrs. Ella Grassman, Mrs. Sadie George, and John and William Couch, all of Des Moines. Mr. Couch also leaves eighteen grandchildren.

The funeral will be held Saturday morning at 9 o’clock from the Visitation church, Ninth street and Garfield avenue. Interment will be at Churchville, Ia.

Transcriber's note: The Couch family was in the 1880 Madison County census, Crawford Township and some of the children were born in the county. First name taken from Iowa Death Certificate.
