IN REMEMBRANCE . . . F. MARION AUSTIN

F. Marion Austin was born November 25, 1939, in the old hospital in Winterset, Iowa, to Forrest M. Austin and Catherine Janice Coe Austin. He passed from this life on June 19, 2012, at Clarke County Hospital in Osceola, Iowa, at the age of 72 after suffering with lung disease for several years.

As a youth Marion was active in Boy Scouts, served as the Sunday School superintendent at the Afton Methodist Church, and worked as the projectionist for Louie Kessler at the Paris Theater in Afton.

Marion graduated from Afton High School in 1957 and the US Trade School for automobile body and fender repair and Fisher Body Division of the General Motors Training Center for sheet metal repair in Kansas City in 1959.

Through the years he was employed in automotive body work in Iowa and Missouri, worked for Wright Tree Service in Des Moines, operated Austin Electric and Plumbing in St. Charles and, and with his brother Alan, Austin Homes/Carpet, Cabinets, and Things in Afton. Marion also instructed Business Machines Technology at SWCC for a time and was service manager at Office Machines in Creston, construction supervisor for Veestra and Kimm of Des Moines, and self-employed in antique vehicle restoration.

Marion served on the Afton City Council and the Afton Development Corporation.

Marion will be missed by his surviving brother Alan Austin (Kathy) of Afton; five sisters, Kathryn Siddens (Gary) of Afton, Beth Gray of Winterset, Virginia Roberts of Ozark, Missouri, Nancy Hofmeister (Lanny) of Creston, and Mary Hill (Wayne) of Afton; a brother-in-law Dennis Larimer of Apple Valley, Minnesota; a sister-in-law Alice Austin of Afton; twenty-two nieces and nephews, numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews; and his Austin and Coe cousins.

Preceding Marion in death were his parents; a brother, Gary Austin; a sister, Linda Larimer; three brothers-in-law, Chuck Gray, Dick Roberts, and Stephen Eckles; and a niece Lanee Austin.

A date has not been determined for interment of cremains at Otterbein Cemetery south of Thayer, Iowa.

Mr. Veldon Deahl, Afton High School principal, hit the nail on the head when he said, “There’s the right way, the wrong way, and the Austin way.” Marion definitely did it his way!
