COUNTY NEWS – Bassett – June 13

Henry Lancaster and family who were moving from Wisconsin, with a team, to Winterset, Iowa, his old home and was visiting friends and relatives of this vicinity, while visiting at J. Michaels on Thursday some of Mrs. Lancaster’s sons with Mr. Michaels boys went boating in the forenoon and did not return to dinner or supper. Mrs. Lancaster became very much alarmed thinking the boys were drowned and died very suddenly.

Her funeral was held at the residence of J. Michaels Saturday forenoon, the body was taken to the Beckwith cemetery for interment. None of the family were able to go to the grave yard on account of one of the daughters not being expected to live on account of her mother’s death.

THE COUNTY AND CITY

Word was received last week of the death of Mrs. C. H. Lancaster, at the home of her sister, in Clayton county. The family had moved from here to Wisconsin, but did not like the country, and were traveling back to Winterset by team, when Mrs. Lancaster was taken sick and died.

One account says that they were crossing a stream, when one of the children fell into the water, and another went in to rescue him and at the same time the horses took fright and ran away with Mrs. Lancaster in the wagon, and that the shock and fright caused her death.

Transcriber's note: Deceased's maiden name taken from husband's (Charles Henry Lancaster) obituary. The Beckwith Cemetery is in Floyd County but she is apparently in an unmarked grave.
