Died, at 10 o’clock p.m., Friday, October 2, 1896, at the home of her father, in Macksburg, Iowa, Mrs. Nellie Sawyers Hasty, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Sawyer.
Nellie E. Sawyers was born in Unionville, Appanoose county, Iowa, July 10th, 1896, removing with her parents to Macksburg in 1880, where she has resided most of the time since.
She was among the first to enter the Macksburg High School after its establishment, and during her attendance she was one of the brightest and best of the students, and was loved by teacher and schoolmates of which a great many have preceeded her to her gracious and heavenly rest.
For several years she was one of the most successful teachers of Madison county.
Easter Sunday, 1895, was about the start of her failing health. She was first to take with malaria fever, from which she never recovered, as it was discovered that the dreaded disease consumption was preying upon her, and upon the advice of her physician, she, with her parents, started November 14, 1895, for Californian with the hope of regaining health, but after a stay of a few months, finding that the Pacific breezes were insufficient, they came back to Saguche, Colorado, to try the mountain air, but finding her health still failing, and she having given up all hope of recovery, and expressing a great desire to be at home among her friends during her last hours, they started for their home in Iowa, arriving in Iowa September 14.
Nellie will be greatly missed by her scores of friends, as she was among the leaders of all church and benevolent work.
She remained conscious up to the last, and the day preceding her departure, she selected the text: “Cast thy burden on the Lord,” found in Psalms, from which she wished her funeral sermon preached, saying this had been her only stay and comfort in time of trouble, and that she was fully resigned to the Lord’s will, and was ready and anxious to go at His call. She leaves a father, mother and one little daughter to mourn her departure.
Many beautiful floral designs and offerings were sent by loving friends, which were beautifully arranged in the M. E. church, at Macksburg where the funeral services were held October 4, 1896, conducted by Rev. F. S. Bunting, at the request of the deceased.A large concourse of friends followed the remains to the Macksburg cemetery for interment to await the last summons.
