The many friends of Mrs. W. H. Bishop were pained to learn of her death which occurred suddenly at the home of her son, Ed, south of town last Wednesday, a week, while she was there for a short visit. “Grandma” Bishop, as she was known to most everyone in this vicinity was well liked by all and was a most estimable old lady. For over thirty-five years she has resided in Decatur county and since the death of her husband which occurred on January 13, 1915, she has made her home in this city.
Margaret Ellis was born in Fayette county, Ohio, on June 26, 1843, and passed away at the home of her son, Ed, in Decatur county, Kansas, being of age 77 years, 1 month and 30 days. She was united in marriage on January 24, 1867 to Wm. H. Bishop and a few years later they came to Kansas to make their home. To the union eight children were born, five of whom survive. They are Lauren, Vernon, and Edison Bishop and Mrs. J. W. Riley, all of Oberlin and Earl, of Tacoma, Washington.
For many years she has lived a devoted Christian life, having joined with the Friends church in early childhood and having later united with the Methodist church of this city. She passed away with the blessed consciousness that she had lived up to her every duty as a loyal devoted wife and mother and with the full knowledge that she had acted well her part. Her death will be sincerely mourned by a large circle of friends in this community. The loss of a friend like grandma Bishop can but serve to deepen the views of life of those of us who remain, and make us feel that we will not always be here.
It is written, ”Be ye also ready, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh”, and it is a truism worthy of note. Those of us who knew and loved Mrs. Bishop best rejoice in the knowledge that she was ready. We hold that the living loving soul lives on. We can not believe that all those treasures of mind and heart are squandered on empty air. We will not believe it and when once we understand the meaning of the spiritual, we see the absolute certainty of eternal life. So beneath the life of Mrs. Bishop, which has vanished away there is a vital thing, the spirit which lives on.
The funeral services were held from the home of her son Ed on Thursday, August 26th and interment made in the Oberlin Cemetery alongside her husband who has long since awaited here coming to that home over There. Rev. Knotter, of the Presbyterian church conducted the services.
