James W. Fry was born in Fredric county, Virginia, November 7, 1820, died December 1, 1902, at his home southwest of Dexter. He grew to young manhood in Fredric county and was married to Elizabeth Jane Fry. He moved after his marriage to Morgantown, Va. and from there to Indiana, then locating in Knox, Co., where the wife died, Feb. 11, 1868. By this union five sons and three daughters were born, all surviving him except one son.

"Uncle Jimmy" Fry, as he was better known, was a familiar figure among the older men of this community. He was a good neighbor and friend to those who needed friendship or assistance, a good father and husband, a man who had striven hard and met many reverses. He was a prominent Odd Fellow, and one of the oldest in Oddfellowship in the state.
The funeral services were held Wednesday, conducted by J.W. Stribling, and in charge of the Odd Fellow lodges of Dexter and Earlham. The remains were buried in the Earlham cemetery.
He leaves four sons and three daughters beside the wife and a large number of friends to mourn his death.
