Page 20, Columns 6-7Menlo Park (UPI) - George L. Stout, former director of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston and a pioneer in the restoration of art works damaged in World War II, died during the weekend following major surgery. He was 80.
Stout moved to California in 1970 after 15 years as director of the Boston museum, and after serving from 1947-1954 as director of the Worcester Museum in Worcester, Mass.
His skills in the application of scientific techniques to all forms of fine art restoration began when as a Navy officer he was assigned to Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower's command as a member of the team of Monuments, Fine Arts and Archive Officers in the combat zones. He was awarded the Bronze Star medal and his team participated in recovering and evaluating works of art damaged by the retreating Nazis. He was later assigned to Gen. Douglas McArthur's Pacific Command to recover Japanese art.
After moving to Menlo Park he served as a consultant for various West Coast art collections, including the Hearst collection at San Simeon and the Tikem Gallery in San Diego, where he also was associated with the Balboa Art Conservation Center. He wrote three books and edited many other books and papers on art conservation, many of which were published in several languages.
He was an honorary fellow for the American and International Institutes for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret, and two sons.
