Martha was born on March 14, 1930 at Washington County Hospital in Washington, Iowa. Her parents were Glenn and Fern (Palmer) Davis. They lived on their farm seven miles west of Washington, Iowa. Martha and three other neighborhood children rode their ponies spring and fall to a one room country school through eighth grade. She graduated from Washington High School in 1947. She attended one semester of Washington Junior College, as she was too young to enter nurses training. In March 1948 she entered the last spring class at Iowa Methodist School of Nursing in Des Moines, Iowa, graduating as an RN in 1951.

Martha’s roommate in nursing school was Erlene Stearns. While in nursing school, she met Erlene’s cousin, Marvin Jobst, from Dexter, Iowa. They were married March 18th, 1951 at the Methodist Church in Washington, Iowa. They moved to his parents’ farm near Dexter, Iowa. They spent their entire married life of 45 years farming in the Dexter Community. They were active in their church and Sunday school, community, and their children’s activities. Martha worked as an RN at Winterset County Hospital, Dexter Clinic, Stuart Nursing Home, and Iowa Methodist Hospital before becoming the school nurse at Earlham Community School for 30 years. She retired in 1995.

Martha was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. She held various offices in Lutheran Ladies Aid, Zion Lutheran Fellowship Club, Luther Layman’s League, and helped with vacation Bible school. She belonged to the Dexter Legion Auxiliary, and Iowa Methodist School of Nursing Alumni. Due to Marvin’s illness, they moved to Earlham in 1995. Marvin passed away in December 1996. In the succeeding years, Martha did volunteer work at Iowa Methodist Hospital and delivered meals for the Meals on Wheels program in Dexter.

Martha’s priorities in life were God, family, and friends. She enjoyed family trips to Alaska and the Bahamas. She looked forward to her breakfasts with nurse friends once a month and family gatherings with children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. They were all very special to her.

Martha is survived by her two sons, Mark (Karen) Jobst of Waukee, Iowa, James (Vivian) Jobst of the Twin Cities, Minnesota, daughter, Cheryl (Steven) Sealine of Dexter, Iowa, and her daughter in-law, Gayle Jobst of Perkasie, Pennsylvania. She has ten grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren: Laura (Ryan) Hutzell, Wyatt and Rowen of Ankeny, Iowa. Sarah (Shawn) Assman, Brynn and Brooke of Waukee, Iowa.
