Viola was born on October 19, 1938. The daughter of Wayne and Reland Wilkinson. She grew up in the Martensdale area and was brought to Martensdale Community Church as a child along with her family by a neighbor. Viola graduated from Martensdale High School in 1957. After which, she moved to Des Moines and worked at Central Life Assurance Company. Along the way, a friend set up a blind date with a young man named David. At first, she did not think it would work out but he kept calling.

In June of 1963, she married her only love, David Martin. God blessed them with four children. They moved back to Martensdale where she was a stay-at-home mom. Throughout the years she babysat many of the area kids along with becoming more involved with Martensdale Community Church.

Viola served the Lord in many ways. She started teaching Sunday School to the younger kids and became the 2-3 year old teacher for many years. Almost every kid that grew up in the church had her as a teacher. She became known as “Teacher Vi” to many, even to this day. She also spent many hours cleaning the church making it “just right” for each Sunday.

Viola liked growing many different types of flowers, gardening and working in the yard. A special time of the year was when the grapes were ripe. She made grape juice and jams including at times with her granddaughters. She would attend or watch videos of the different activities they were doing. She enjoyed crocheting and putting together puzzles.

Viola also enjoyed many camping trips to Lake Red Rock, Branson, and many others. They also had fun on trips to Myrtle Beach and Florida with family and friends. Viola loved her family and they miss her terribly but they know they will see her again in heaven.

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 (ESV)
