Private family services for James Gilbert Couch will be held Saturday, March 13, 2021. Friends may join the family on Jim’s obituary page of Overton Funeral Home’s website beginning at 11 a.m. Cremation will follow services and inurnment of cremains, with military rites, will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Churchville, IA at a later date.

James (Jim) Gilbert Couch was born September 4, 1946 to James T. and Josephine (Cooper) Couch in Patterson, IA. Jim passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 7, 2021 at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Indianola, IA at the age of 74.

He started school at Patterson then moved to Churchville in the 5th grade where he attended Martensdale St. Marys for the duration of his schooling. He left school after 11th grade to enlist with the United States Marine Corps. He served in the Marines from 1964 through 1967 with 13 months of it working in the motor pool in Vietnam.

Shortly after returning from the Marines, he began working for Armstrong/Titan Tire in Des Moines and retired after 30 years. After retiring from Titan Tire, he worked for Priority Express for a few years and then retired from Heating & Cooling.

Jim met his future wife, Myrna Sill in the summer of 1967. They were married on August 25, 1967 and made their first home in the town of Indianola. Two sons were born to their union, James Brandon and Ryan Patrick. They raised their family in the home they built in rural Indianola.

In addition to his marine service, career, and family life, Jim served his community by being a member of the Izaak Walton League in Des Moines. In his free time, Jim enjoyed camping, fishing, gardening, and playing with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In his later years, he enjoyed fishing trips to Missouri and Canada, and watching the grandkids and great-grandkids play sports.

Jim is survived by his wife Myrna Couch of over 53 years; son, Ryan Couch; grandchildren, Amanda (Jeremy) Zwack, Kelsey (Kris) Hentschel, Haley (Garrett) Couch, Alex Couch, Emily Couch, Mason Couch, Jillian Couch and Samantha Couch; great-grandchildren, Landon and Tristan Hentschel and Briella Zwack; sisters, Bev (Lee) Reinholdt, Pam (Dave) Jarvis, and Angie (Paul) O’Mara; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, James Brandon Couch; parents, James Couch and Josephine Couch; and brothers, Randy Couch and Steve Couch.

Public visitation will be held 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 12, at Overton Funeral Home where family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Face masks are required. Memorials may be given to the Cumming American Legion Post #562.
