Gregory Myles Alexander, 72, of Winterset, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, March 20, 2021.
Greg was born on February 23, 1949, the first of seven children, to Myles and Margie Alexander in Des Moines, Iowa. He graduated from Winterset High School in 1967. In 1966, he began his life-long journey in the concrete field, and in 1986 he established Alexander Construction – a company that has faithfully served the Winterset and central Iowa area for over 35 years. It was Greg’s dream to provide world-class concrete services to beautify and build the community he loved so much.
Greg loved working hard and did so throughout his entire life, whether it was on a wrestling mat, a football field, at his family farm, or a construction site. He gave many hours to community organizations, but none so much as the Winterset Kiwanis, where he was an iconic fixture at every pancake breakfast and eventually earned his beloved nickname, “Egg”. Greg loved supporting others, and his generosity and kindness is legendary. For such a tough guy, he was quite the softy and someone who loved and was loved by many, many people.
Greg never retired, and in fact, he was still dedicated to his craft until his final days. In addition to working hard, Egg also loved to play hard, and he spent many hours honing his skills playing pool, throwing darts, and spinning a good story while enjoying time with his many friends.
He was a passionate fan and fundraiser for all Winterset athletics programs, and he always cheered for his Iowa Hawkeyes. He loved music, cribbage, and making breakfast for his children. He was also a lover of all animals, especially dogs and birds, and no one will ever forget his little buddy, Murphy, the marmoset.
Most importantly, he was an amazing father who made sure his kids were raised to feel loved, supported, and respected – no matter what, no exceptions. He was an incredible son to his mother, Margie, and a dedicated brother to his siblings and so many others.
Greg is survived by his three loving children, Sasha Alexander (John and Ida Goupell) of Iowa City, Hillary Alexander of Napa Valley, CA, and Jared Alexander of Winterset; brother Jeff Alexander (Bernadette Taylor) of LaCrosse, WI, brother, Dan (Gayle) Alexander, of Winterset, sister Julie Alexander of Macksburg, brother David (Sue) Alexander of Aurora, CO, sister Jill Alexander of Winterset; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bruce and Fern Algreen, and Alvin and Helene Alexander; parents, Myles and Margie Alexander; and sister, Stacey “Buffy” Alexander.
A private graveside service will be held the morning of Saturday, April 3rd, 2021 at the Penn Center Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held for Greg’s friends and family later that day at 2 pm at his shop building located at 812 E Highway 92 in Winterset.
The family asks that you send any pictures or stories about Greg that you’d like to share to sasha.alexander at yahoo.com. In lieu of flowers, please consider living plants, or you may direct a memorial contribution to Farmers and Merchants State Bank in Winterset.
