Death of Martyn Ewing

The sad and entirely unexpected news of the death of H. M. Ewing, at Washington D.C.,
arrived here last Saturday, and caused general grief in this, his old home, where he has been known and esteemed since childhood.

Henry Martyn Ewing was born in Giles county, Tennessee, December 3, 1845.

In 1854, with his father, the Rev. John C. Ewing, who was the founder and first pastor of the First Presbyterian church, he came to Winterset. Here his boyhood and early youth was spent. He graduated from Eastman’ Business College of Poughkeepsie in 1866. He occupied the position of editor of the Winterset Madisonian in 1865.

In 1872 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Lauck, of whom, after little over a year of wedded life, he was bereaved. For the past thirty years he has been a skilled and trusted employee of the United States Treasury department, at the time of his death occupying the responsible office of first assistant chief of the National Bank Redemption Agency.

He was a child of the Covenant, baptized in his infancy by the Rev. Edward McMillan, reunited with the church by profession of faith in 1864, when about nineteen years of age, and ever since has been a consistent an faithful member.

He was a useful member of society, respected and beloved by a large circle of acquaintances and friends, a faithful officer, a dutiful and affectionate son and a kind and loving brother. The testimony of the sister who mourns his loss is, that during his whole life he never spoke a hard or unkind word to her, and a friend who had known him intimately said, “I believe that he was the best man I ever knew.” He was very unselfish, and always looked on the bright side.

He died January 14. He had suffered from and attack of the grip, but was seemingly much better and able to go to the department, but the end was near, and a short time after he was removed, as we confidently hope, to the heavenly home. The immediate cause of death was neuralgia of the heart.

He leaves a brother and sister, together with a large circle of friends and acquaintances, to mourn his loss.

The remains are expected to arrive here from Washington tonight, and the funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday) at the Presbyterian church.
