Winterset, IowaLarry Gene Roberts crossed over the bridge to go to his final home on Saturday, February 6, 2021 at the Madison County Memorial Hospital of Alzheimer’s.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, February 18, 2021 at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, near Van Meter. Memorials in memory of Larry may be directed to EveryStep Hospice in Winterset and/or Alzheimer’s Association.
Larry was born on April 16, 1940 in Columbia, Iowa, the son of William and Kathryn (Beebout) Roberts. He grew up and went to school in Sewal, Iowa until his parents moved to Des Moines his junior year. He graduated from North High in June of 1958. Three days later he was in the Navy. He served until June 1962. He was stationed in San Diego, CA, Norman, AL, Jasonville, FL, Japan, and finally China Lake, CA where he was discharged.
Larry married Velma Rizzi on May 2, 1964. To this union three children were born. They later separated. Larry met Betty McVay the end of 1988 and after 17 years together, they married on April 29, 2006. Larry worked various jobs in California before moving back to Iowa. Larry retired from Teamsters after 30 years of driving semi. He worked multiple part time jobs the last being for Parks & Rec in Winterset. He really liked that job and took pride in it.
Larry was known as “Roberts” and his CB handle, “Little Fool”. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He liked his sugar cookies, vanilla shakes from Frostee’s and his Busch Light. He loved canned spinach and enjoyed a snack of milk and saltine crackers. He liked to fish and enjoyed farming on his small acreage. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends and maybe having a beer or two. He was quick-witted and an active man always there to help whoever needed it. He was always known for being a hard worker and trying to outwork the younger guys and more times than not, he would.
Larry is survived by his wife, Betty; children, Steven Roberts of Winterset, Tina (Matt) McDonald of Waukee and Kathie Roberts of West Bend; stepchildren, Patrick McVay, Delta McVay, Nathan (Sabrina) McVay, all of Winterset, Bud (Michelle) McVay of Peru; brother, Daryl (Mary Lynn) Roberts of Kansas City, MO; sister-in-law, Flo Roberts of Winterset; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Craig and Jay; granddaughter, Aliya McDonald; grandson, Keith Michael McVay and Stepson, Eric McVay.
