Richard Sissel

Richard Gary Sissel, 89, spent nearly nine decades on this Earth serving his Lord, Jesus Christ; his family and the communities he called home. Richard was born August 5, 1931, in Muscatine, Iowa, the son of Arthur Leonard Sissel and Sarah Ethel Sissel. He passed away on January 22, 2021, at his home in Winterset, Iowa, to walk alongside his Lord.

Richard was a veteran, serving two years in the Korean War. He spoke very fondly of his time serving in the United States Army – he was very proud of his service to his country.

He met Sharon Lukins, when she was 16 years old at a Youth for Christ rally. They were married on August 27, 1954. To this union, Richard and Sharon had Leonard, James, Daniel and Angela.

Richard, Sharon and their family spent their lives dedicated to giving back to others whether it was in: Muscatine; Dubuque; Iowa City; Waterloo; Moline, Ill.; Portage, Wis.; Wheaton, Ill. or in Winterset for the past 42 years.

In the early years of their marriage, Richard and Sharon spent nearly a year as missionaries in Africa on the Ivory Coast. That experience was one Richard spoke highly of through his life and in the church as he helped spread the Gospel.

Richard was preceded in death by: his parents, Arthur and Ethel; his siblings and spouses, Lucy (Ray), Vernon (Viola), and Arthur; Earl, brother-in-law; Esther, sister-in-law.

He is survived by his loving wife, Sharon; children, Len (Tonya), James, Daniel (Marie), Angela (Brian); sister, Bonnie; sister-in-law, Virginia; brother-in-law, Jim (Marilyn); grandchildren, James (Renee), Joshua (Melissa), Jonathan, Benjamin, Jaxon (Mary), Savana and Taylor; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
