Capt. Elliot Dead
The older citizens of Madison County will remember Capt. G. N. Elliot, who lived in Winterset in the early days, when he was one of the prominent attorneys at the Winterset bar. He was a native of Millersburg, Ohio: came to Winterset in 1857, and began the practice of his profession. Soon after the outbreak of the civil war he raised a company for the Thirty-ninth Iowa and became its captain. He served through the war, marched with Sherman to the sea, and near the close of the war was brevetted lieutenant- colonel. After being mustered out he returned to Winterset, but soon removed to Warrensburg, Mo., where he resumed the practice of law. In 1878 he removed to Topeka, Kansas, where he continued the practice of his profession. In 1891 he was elected to the office of probate judge, which he held for two terms.
His death came suddenly from heart failure on the morning of December 28th, 1899. He arose that morning in his usual health, attended to a few ordinary things about the house as he had been accustomed to do, and then sat in the dining room to await breakfast. His daughter was seated near him. She heard a slight groan, and turned around just in time to catch him as he started to fall to the floor. A physician was summoned, but before his arrival Capt. Elliot was dead.
Capt. Elliot leaves a wife, Mrs. Mary Elliot, and two grown children, Charles S. and Miss Lulu. Another daughter, Messie, died in 1892.
