Sheryl Lynn Mattern

Sheryl Lynn (Young) Mattern, age 67, of Des Moines, IA peacefully entered the Kingdom of Heaven surrounded by her family on Wednesday, December 30, 2020, after fighting a courageous battle with uterine cancer.

Sheryl was born to Phyllis and Forrest Young on February 24, 1953, in Winterset, IA. She was the youngest of four children. She attended school at Interstate 35. She was on the Pom Squad in High School and enjoyed working as a waitress at the St. Charles Café. Sherry went on to study at Central College for two years and then transferred to Iowa State University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education.

While attending Central College, Sheryl met the love of her life, Dave Mattern. They had a special love and devotion to one another. Dave and Sheryl were married on November 30, 1974, at the St. Charles Methodist Church.

Shortly after graduating from Iowa State, Sheryl and Dave taught school in Australia for two years, where they had many wonderful adventures and made life-long friendships. Sheryl taught Kindergarten for 36 years for the Des Moines Public Schools. She treasured and loved her students, parents, and fellow coworkers. After retiring, she volunteered in her daughter’s classrooms and at Jefferson Elementary School. She was a member of KAPPA KAPPA IOTA, an educator’s sorority. She was a member of Park Avenue Christian Church where she was an elder, Sunday school teacher for adults and kids, and was a leader of several committees. Her faith was the source of her strength and joy.

Sheryl and Dave lovingly raised twin daughters, Marcia and Melissa. One of Sheryl’s greatest joys was spending time with her family and making many wonderful memories and traditions. She looked forward to traveling every summer to Florida and hanging out on the beach. She was a loving wife to Dave for 46 years, an amazing mom, an extraordinary grandma to six grandchildren, a caring sister, a loyal friend, and a daughter of God. Sheryl found purpose in serving others. She lived out her faith and was an inspiration to many. She was an “angel” here on earth to so many. She will be deeply and forever missed!

Sheryl is survived by her husband Dave; daughters, Melissa Schulz of Ankeny, Marcia Sheriff (Brian) of Urbandale; grandchildren, Ella, Jackson, and Ethan Schulz, Amber, Anna, and Allison Sheriff; sisters, Pat Brandt of West Des Moines, Chris Day (Dennis) of Grinnell; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Sheryl was preceded in death by her parents; brother, David Young; and brother-in-law, Donal Brandt.

Memorial contributions can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, John Stoddard Cancer Center, or Park Avenue Christian Church.

We will have a visitation from 4:30-7:30 pm Thursday, January 7th at Iles Westover Funeral Home on Hickman. Masks are required. Due to the pandemic, a private family service will be held at Iles Westover Funeral Home on Friday, January 8th at 1:00 pm with burial to follow at St. Charles Cemetery.
