Sterling Major McCasland

On December 21, 2020, the Lord called Mabel Fern McCasland to Heaven. Four days later, after celebrating Christmas with his family, Sterling Major “Tex” McCasland went to Heaven to spend eternity with his loving wife and soulmate of 73 years.

Sterling Major McCasland was born October 28, 1927 in Goldthwaite, Texas, the son of Major Grace McCasland and Myrtle May (Plummer) and raised by his mother and step-father Walter Deitrick. He was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge. Sterling retired from Meredith Cooperation after a career of 36 years as a printing pressman.

Mabel Fern (Patterson) McCasland blessed her parents Ernest Julius and Lela Alvis (Patterson) with her presence December 31, 1927 in Grand Prairie, Alberta, Canada. Mabel and Sterling were blessed to allow Mabel to stay home and raise their three children, grandchildren and provided love and support for their great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. After their children were grown, Mabel went college and received her degree in Administration. Sterling, Mabel, and Shirley (Baker) Givant became partners in business co-owning Country Haven Guest Home Assisted Living Facility.

Major and Mabel’s greatest joys in life were spending time with family. In their eyes, everyone was family and welcome. No one ever left without being offered coffee and food. A full house was a happy house and everything had value. Sterling’s greatest words of wisdom in life: “Never Lie”. Fern felt the most important quality in life was to love your family with all of your heart.

Sterling and Mabel are preceded in death by their children Mabel Fern Briggs and Gary Sterling McCasland and grandson Howard Rush. Those left to cherish their memory include their son Steven Major McCasland (Charlene); grandchildren: Kimberly (Clifford) Harlan, William Yates, James Yates, Cindy (Harry) Reed, Christine (Kurt) Townsend, and Steven (Sherri) McCasland; great-grandchildren: Kevin Sears, Stephanie Harlan, Brandon Harlan, Korbi McCasland, Scott Harlan, Nathina Simonton, Sylvia Townsend, Christian McCasland, Zachary Edwards, Amalee Larson, Aleea Laron, Blake Larson, Preston McCasland, and Madeleine Reed; great-great-grandchildren: Amethyst Herold, Dwight Simonton, Iden Nikolish, Asher Whitlatch, Aphrodite McCasland, Lelli Whitlatch, and Zyon Smith. Sterling and Mabel are preceded in death by their parents. Sterling is preceded in death by his sister Linstene Lamb.

The family respectfully requests the wearing of masks and social distancing. Visitation will be 10:00-11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 5, 2020 followed by the funeral at 11:00 a.m. at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. After the service lunch will be served.
