Winterset, Iowa

Marjorie Ellen Anderson, 98, of Winterset, died Monday, December 7, 2020 at her home.

Marjorie was born January 7, 1922. She grew up on a beautiful farm in Adair County, south of Casey, Iowa and attended country school with her sisters. She was the second daughter of four, born to Roy and Mae (Mowry) Cowden. She graduated from Casey High School in 1939 and then went on to beauty school in Des Moines.

Upon completion of beauty school, Marjorie moved to Walnut, Iowa where she owned and operated a beauty shop. In 1945, she moved to Winterset and opened Marjorie’s Beauty Shop. She met Willis Anderson at a Methodist Church dinner and they were married in 1956. They moved to Grand Forks North Dakota in 1959, where they opened a Ben Franklin store and operated it for the next 23 years. They appreciated all the loyal support of their customers over the years. They decided to leave the very cold North Dakota winters to enjoy their retirement in Sun City West, Arizona. After Willis’ death in 2000, Marjorie moved back to Winterset.

Marjorie was a very loving mother and wonderful homemaker. She made many delicious meals and many pies and cookies that her children remember fondly to this day. Even the neighbor kids knew where they could get a delicious cookie at her home.

She was a great help to Willis in the dime store and a very loving and supportive spouse. Her kids remember her cheery good morning and sparkle in her eye. She was always interested in and supported their schoolwork and activities and created an all- around wonderful home.

Marjorie is survived by her daughter, Sally (Sterling) Morris of Winterset; son, Mark Anderson of Winterset; and sister, Jean Larson of Omaha.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Mae (Mowry) Cowden; husband, Willis Anderson; and sisters, Bethel Reid and Lois James.

Funeral service will be Friday, December 11, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Winterset Chapel and burial will be in the Winterset Cemetery.
