Curtis Hiatt, 68, of Earlham, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 16, 2020 at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines.

Curt was born on December 8, 1951 to Morris and Marcella Hiatt in Winterset, Iowa. He graduated from Winterset High School in 1970.

Curt loved working on machines which he learned while helping his father at Hiatt Repair Shop. After high school, Curt worked as a mechanic at Hircock Lawn Mower Repair in Winterset. From there he moved on to work at Ford Tractor in Des Moines, Bobst Implement in Earlham, Riverside Equipment in Adel and lastly Greenfield Implement, now Titan Machinery in Greenfield. He retired in 2016.

Curt enjoyed anything that got him outdoors. In his younger years, he enjoyed archery and would travel to many competitions, at most of which he won awards. Hunting and fishing were his passions and he went whenever he could. Curt would always join in on the twice yearly fishing trip to Spruce Lodge at Star Lake in the Dent, Minnesota area, as this was one of his favorite adventures. He also loved his motorcycles and working with his hands. Lastly, he enjoyed visiting with his family and friends when he was able.

Curt is survived by his loving wife, Chris Hiatt of Earlham; children, Cory (Suzann) Hiatt of Guthrie Center, and Marie Anne Backlund of Bethpage, TN and their mother, Ardith Keplinger of Mt. Ayr; sisters, Esther Cook of Aurora, IL, and Ruth Ann (Steve) Kiddoo of Winterset; brother, Terry Hiatt of Dent, MN; 6 grandkids, Dylan, Devin, Savannah, Josh, Alex and Kolby; 1 great grandson, Calvin; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Robert and Chuck Hiatt.

Graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, November 14, 2020 at the Peru Cemetery. Live streaming of the service will be available at caldwellparrish.com on Curt’s tribute wall.

Memorial contributions may be made out to the Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines for the excellent care they provided Curt.
