Deva Countryman Welton, daughter of John Calvin Duffield and Mary Olive Bennett Duffield, was born December 7, 1915 in Garden Grove, Iowa. She passed from this life on May 23, 2003 at Mercy Capitol Hospital in Des Moines at the age of 87 years. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2003 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Osceola. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the Earlham Cemetery in Earlham.

Deva received her education from the Des Moines schools. She was united in marriage to Roy Countryman on April 22, 1933 in Guthrie Center and three children blessed this union, Calvin, Mary-Del and Donald. Roy preceded her in death in July of 1971. Deva was united in marriage to Kenneth B. Welton on June 16, 1985 in Ankeny. Kenneth preceded her in death in April of 1998.

Deva had lived in Des Moines for nearly 77 years before moving to the Garden Grove area. She lived near Garden Grove until 1993 when she moved to Osceola. Deva had worked as a bookkeeper for Iowa Council on Alcohol Problems from March 1951 until October 1971 when she retired. She then became caretaker to elderly ladies following her retirement. She was active with the Alzheimer’s support group. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Osceola and Des Moines where she served as a deaconess and church secretary.

Deva was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Roy Countryman, second husband, Kenneth Welton; two brothers, Gordon Bennett Duffield and Dean Calvin Duffield, one sister, Grace Deelen Shaffer Cowdrick; two grandsons, Junior Countryman and Steve Savage; and a great-grandson, Andrew Curtis.

She leaves to cherish her memory her son, Calvin Eugene Countryman and wife Tana of Osceola; daughter, Mary-Del Beane and husband Gilbert Lee of Des Moines; son Donald Paul Countryman and wife Jean of Creston; stepdaughters, Karen Savage and Joann McConnell of Des Moines; 21 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; six great great-grandchildren, as well as other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be at the Kale Funeral Home in Osceola with the family greeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday.
