Lawrence “Larry” Keith Posekany, age 84, passed away on Saturday, August 8, 2020 at Wesley Acres in Des Moines. There will be a graveside service following at 2:30 p.m. at Elm Grove Cemetery. The family respectfully asks guests to wear masks and encourages social distancing. Please bring lawn chairs to graveside.

Larry was born December 24, 1935 on the family farm in Jud, North Dakota during a Christmas Eve blizzard, with a neighbor delivering him and his brother Dick boiling water. In March of 1936, the family moved to Belle Plaine where he went to school in Irving at County School York #5 and then York #6 when the family moved across Highway 30 when he was six years old. His father, Milo, had one of the first combines so Larry started threshing at age eight to help and he and his brother, Don, always worked on neighboring farms. He and Don also raised hogs, and he was immensely proud of his hog, Sharky, who was crowned champion at the Benton County Fair one summer. Larry was confirmed at the Methodist Church in Elberon.

Larry graduated from Belle Plaine High School in 1953, where he was class president. When he was a junior in high school, the bus driver would drop he and the Bobinette brothers off at the pool hall, run his route, and then come back and honk for them to come out and would take them home. He developed into an accomplished pool player from this ritual. During the summer following graduations, he played Legion Ball, playing all positions while working on the railroad steel gang from Cedar Rapids to Clinton. His father, Milo, did not approve of the steel gang, so Larry moved to Des Moines and earned salesmanship, accounting, and business management degrees from the American Institute of Business in 1956. He enlisted in the Iowa National Guard, where he served for six years, and completed a six-month clerk typist program while working at Fort Knox. He returned to Des Moines to work at Armstrong in payroll. During this time, he met Jacqueline “Jackie” Posekany, who was friends with his roommate. They married at Highland Park Lutheran Church in Des Moines on November 17, 1962 and made their home on the south side of Des Moines. They had three daughters, Kristine, Kathleen and Kayanne.

Larry was selected to attend data processing school and worked at Carrier’s Insurance for 18 years as a Data Processing Manager. When Carrier’s Insurance closed, he purchased and managed a grocery store in Earlham Iowa. He completed his employment at Herschel’s in Indianola, retiring at age 70.

Larry was a lifetime Chicago Cubs fan and felt blessed to see them win a world series in his lifetime. He loved to catch up with his grandchildren, collect old coins, and was a long-time member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, serving in the past as a Council Member.

He is survived by his three daughters: Kristine “Kris” (Curtis) Steinmetz, Kathleen “Kathy” Posekany, and Kayanne “Annie” (Stan) Kleppinger; grandchildren: Courtney, Andrew (Hailey), and Emily Steinmetz; Ian, Max, Will, and Henry Kleppinger; great-grandson Brooks Steinmetz; sister, Diana Castell (Dale Fouch Jr.), several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and loving family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Jacqueline (Jackie) Posekany, parents Milo and Nora Posekany, brothers Richard, Robert, and Donald; sisters: Lois Haloupek, Ardis Steele; and several extended family members.
