HERRING DROWNED WHILE SWIMMING

Dr. Hubert Herring Former Pastor of Presbyterian Church, Drowned at Vineyard Haven.

Dr. Hubert Herring, several years pastor of the First Presbyterian church of Winterset, was drowned Thursday last while bathing at Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts. Vineyard Haven is near Boston on the coast.

Dr. Herring was pastor in Winterset from 1892 to 1896, coming here from Sioux City where he preached a year after graduating from a theological school. He was a perfect specimen of physical manhood, big and strong. His ability soon gave him more than local reputation and he was called to Omaha in 1896 by a big Congregational church. From Omaha he went to Boston and at the time of his death was one of the most prominent and influential directors of the Congregational church in America.

News of his death was read with sincere sorrow by Winterset people and letters and telegrams of sympathy were sent to Mrs. Herring and the children.

DR. HUBERT HERRING DROWNED IN MASS.
Was Popular Pastor of Winterset Pres. church from 1889 to 1894

Announcement has been made of the death by drowning of Dr. Hubert C. Herring at Chilmark, Mass., on August 6. No further details have been furnished as to the circumstances of this sad event which touches so closely the many Winterset people who knew and admired Mr. Herring during his pastorate here.

At the close of 1889, Mr. Herring was installed as pastor of the First Presbyterian church, a relation which was terminated in the summer of 1894 by a call to the Hyde Park Presbyterian church, Chicago.

During his residence in Winterset, Mr. Herring wielded large influence in church and civic circles. His talent for organization was exercised in many ways perhaps the greatest benefit to the city being the founding of the public library. Through his perseverance and tenacity the project was planned and fostered and the splendid library now existing as the result of his early efforts is a reminder of the debt this town owes to his foresight.

The Presbyterian manse was built during his pastorate, the church auditorium was handsomely frescoed and the organ which is still in use was bought through his recommendation.

His relationship with his people and this community was dignified, yet sympathetic. Though barely 30 years old when he was installed here, his studious mind brought steady and rapid growth in pulpit ability, an ability which was recognized throughout the town and is still recalled by those of other denominations.

His eldest son, Hubert, Jr., also a minister, was born in Winterset as were his other children. Mrs. Herring was Miss Mary Woodbridge and resided in Sioux City at the time of her marriage, Mr. Herring being a minister in that city.

From Hyde Park, Mr. Herring went to Omaha as pastor of the Congregational church, then came his call to a broad work as general secretary of the National Council of Congregational churches, which position he occupied at the time of his death. His work required travel all over the United States and the fact that he had been retained in this position of high responsibility is proof of his rare qualities.

The death of Dr. Herring has brought genuine sorrow to his old time friends in Winterset who witnessed his rise to honor and fame and loved him for his simplicity of manner, his excessive modesty, his strong mentality and his great heart.
