Jacob Cocklin Dead

Jacob Cocklin, a former well known shoe dealer in Winterset, died at his home in Ridgeway, Missouri, Sunday. His son, Millie Cocklin, lived with him. Mr. Cocklin has lived in Missouri ever since moving from Madison county many years ago.

Jacob W. Cocklin

Jacob W. Cocklin was born December 24, 1883 in Cumberland county, Pennsylvania, near Harrisburg and when about ten years of age, moved with his parents to Marshallville, Ohio.

On September 11, 1860, he was united in marriage to Mary A. Knight. To this union were born five children, Wm. Ellsworth, Samuel Miller, Carrie Maggie, Bertha Mary, and Lauren Manfred, three having preceded him in death. His wife, Mary A., Died April 3, 1917, and since that time he has gradually failed and passed away at his home April 11, 1920 aged 86 years 3 months and 18 days.

In the spring of 1868 he moved to Winterset, Iowa, engaged in the boot and shoe business for eleven years. In 1879 he moved to a farm in Madison county, Iowa, where he lived until 1895, combining farming with the occupation of teacher in the public schools. Twenty-five years ago he moved to the farm a half miles east of Ridgeway which has since been his home and where he died.

Deceased was very fond of music, having taught singing school for many years, beginning more than 65 years ago, and was a proficient player of the violin.

He was scrupulously honest and would spared no pains to give value received or more in every business deal. A life time neighbor says “If anyone ever practiced the Golden rule it was uncle Jacob Cocklin.”

Living children are two sons, S. M. and L. M. Cocklin, both of Ridgeway. He also leaves six grandchildren and one great-grandchild to mourn his death.

A good citizen and a useful man has lived out his days and been gathered to his fathers. May God’s blessing be upon the children and friends who are left. - Ridgeway Journal.
