FORMER MADISON COUNTY MAN DEAD IN BASEMENT

The body of Emerson White was found in the basement of his furniture store in Belle Plain, Kansas, after firemen had subdued the flames and started an investigation as to the cause of the fire. It is believed that he was a suicide.

White was raised in Jefferson township, Madison county on the farm now owned by Marquardt. He was well known in the Fairview neighborhood. He left the county 33 years ago and moved to Belle Plain where has been in business. He was a widower.

In August 1929 he disappeared from his store and a state wide search was made for him. After several months he suddenly appeared saying that he had been away for a short time. No explanation of his absence was given. Firemen believe he set fire to the store and killed himself. The body was badly burnt.
