Klina Thompson

Klina “Shorty” Thompson, 88, of Mount Ayr, formerly of Creston, died Monday, June 8, 2020 at the Clearview Home in Mount Ayr. Celebration of Life Service will be 2 p.m. Friday, June 12, 2020 at the Powers Funeral Home 601 New York Ave. in Creston. Pastor Jodi Rushing will officiate. Burial will be at the Greenlawn Cemetery near Afton. Open visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday, with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Powers Funeral Home in Creston. We will be observing social distancing precautions during this time. Memorials can be made in Klina’s name to be determined later.

Klina Belle “Shorty” Thompson was born on December 22, 1931, in Siam, Iowa to Nina Belle (Arthur) Gardner and John Edgar Gardner. Klina graduated from Cromwell High School in 1950.

On September 9, 1951, Klina was united in marriage to John L. “Jack” Thompson in Corning, Ia. They settled on a farm near Cromwell where she worked as a farmwife and worked at Hanson’s Drug Store Creston. They then moved to Winterset where she worked at the Northside Café as a waitress. In 1956, the couple moved to Beaman, Iowa, where they lived for seven years. While residing there, Klina worked at the local grocery store and restaurant. Klina and Jack then relocated to Rocklin, Calif. Klina worked as an office manager for 22 years at the Cochranes Chapel of Roses Funeral Home in Roseville, Calif until her retirement. Klina and Jack returned to Creston in 1990. Jack passed away in 2007. Klina moved to Mount Ayr in 2017.

Klina was a member of the Rebekah Lodge when she lived in Beaman, Ia., and a member of the Soroptimist International of Roseville, Calif.

Klina is survived by her many nieces and nephews. Klina was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jack Thompson, 5 sisters, Darlene Porter, Pauline McAuley, Doris Williamson, Gladys (Robert) Strange and Betty Cooper and her 2 brothers Lloyd “Cotton” Gardner and Eldon “Boots” Gardner.
