Death of Former Resident

Commodore A. Smith, former resident of Winterset, died February 17, at Nevada, Missouri. Burial was made in Olin, Iowa.

Mr. Smith formerly lived on the James Lorimor place in Scott township and later moved to Winterset, living in what was then known as the Oliver White house. He moved from Winterset about fifteen years ago.

Commodore A. Smith – The Olin “C” Press

Funeral services were conducted last Friday afternoon at the local U. B. church for Commodore Americus Smith, who died at Bronaugh, Mo.. Feb 17, following an attack of heart trouble. Rev. G. H. Varce, pastor of the church, conducted the service. Burial was in the local cemetery.

Commodore Americus Smith was born at Hale, Iowa, Aug 10, 1852, and died of heart trouble at Bronaugh, Missouri, Feb. 17, 1930, at the age of 77 years, 6 months and 7 days.

He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Waite Walston at Hale, Iowa. Dec. 24, 1879. To this union was born nine children, two of whom died in early childhood. The surviving sons and daughters are Milo G. of Winona, Miss.; Irvin C. of Saco, Mon.; Commie J., of Benson, Minn.; Will N. of Indianola, Iowa; Mrs. Daisy T. Young of Nevada, Missouri; Bert A. of Waterloo, Iowa; Walter M. of Benson, Minn. All of the children except Milo of Winona, Miss., were present at the funeral.

There are also 34 grandchildren, three of whom were present at the funeral: Miss Lenore Smith of Winona, Miss.; Margaret Smith of Waterloo, Iowa; LaVaughn Smith of Indianola, Iowa.

Mr. Smith was the oldest of eight children, and I survived by four sisters and one brother.

He farmed 16 years in Jones county, when he moved to Madison county where he lived 13 years. He spent a year and a half in Texas, then returned to Iowa for four years. He then moved to Minnesota, living there six years, and from Minnesota he went to Missouri where he remained until the death of his wife some two and a half years ago. For the past two years he has visited among children.

Mr. Smith united with the Methodist church at Wyoming while a resident of this community, and when he moved to the western part of the state transferred his membership to the Christian church at Winterset.
