Newspaper clipping, date unknownFUNERAL OF MRS. LOTTYE SLOCUM
Last Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Massena M.E. Church of which she had long been a working member, Massena and countryside was gathered enmasse to pay its last respects to Mrs. Lottye Slocum, wife of F.A. Slocum, who died Wednesday evening at 6 o'clock after an illness of six weeks duration in spite of all that faithful relatives, friends, nurses and doctors could do to restore her to health.
Business was suspended in the city and a gathering that overflowed the church was assembled to mingle their sorrows with the bereaved family and relatives. More lavishly numerous and beautiful floral tributes never attested the sympathy of Massena than on this occasion.
Stricken down in the prime of an active social and church life the loss of Mrs. Slocum is universally felt in this vicinity and the family which is bereft of a mother's care and love has the deep felt sympathy of all. The following brief obituary read at the funeral encompasses the life record of the departed:
Lottye Fairholm was born in Madison county, Iowa, Sept. 30, 1882. She was united in Marriage to Fred A. Slocum, Oct. 17, 1900 at Bridgewater, Iowa.
There came to gladden and enrich the family circle thus formed these children: Mayo, Olga, Clella and Calla, the twins, Ruby, Dorothy and Dean. Three of these preceded the mother into the great beyond; Calla at the age of one month, Dorothy at three years and Olga in her sixteenth year.
Mrs. Slocum leaves in sorrow her husband and four children, her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. I.V. Fairhlom of this city, three brothers, Arthur of Anita, Iowa, Frank and Harry of Winterset, Iowa, two sisters, Mrs. C.R. Afflack and Mrs. Dale A. Callison of Earlham, Iowa, together with other relatives and friends.
Lottye is the first of a family of six children to answer to "the well done" of the Heavenly Father.
Mrs. Slocum was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church taking an active part in Missionary circle, Aid society and choir work. She was initiated into the order of the Eastern Star in December 1920 being appointed to the office of Electa January 4, 1921.
Lottye was a faithful mother to her children and took delight in providing the proper kind of a home for them. She was beloved by all who knew her and her loss will be deeply felt. It was with great patience that the afflictions of the past few weeks were born.
She was faithful to the church and tried her best to do the work that God had given her to do.
