Obituary - Robert Fletcher Payton was born February 25, 1903 at the old Payton Homestead, 4 miles southwest of Van Meter in Madison county. He died November 6, 1929, age 26 years.

He graduated from the Van Meter High school in 1921, then going to Ames to the Iowa State College of Agriculture. He graduated from the Engineering department in 1925, after leaving college he took up work with the government as a civil engineer along the Missouri River near New Orleans.

In the university he was active in college athletic and was a second lieutenant in the Reserve Officers Training Course. He was a good student, a hard worker, popular among his friends.

He united with the Methodist church when he was about 15 years of age. He was a good, clean, manly Christian young man and was true to his Lord.

He leaves to mourn his departure, his father, 3 sisters, Mrs. Roy Clayton, Mrs. Margaret Kitchell and Miss Louise Payton, of Des Moines. His mother and sister, Mildred preceded him to the glory world.

VAN METER

The community was grieved to hear of the death of Robert Payton last Tuesday morning. Robert had returned from Oakdale just one week ago. Relatives and friends had hoped, being at home might help him regain his health, but he quietly slipped away.

The funeral was held Thursday afternoon in the Methodist church, Rev. Cochell assisted by Rev. Hampshire officiated. School mates composed the quartet, Paul Henry, Dwight England, Roy Lint, and Roy Henry. Pallbearers, also schoolmates, were as follows; Basil Golden, Dwight England, Earnest Marquardt, Kenneth Dunn, Charles Smith and Clarence Cutshall.

Robert graduated from the Van Meter High school in 1921 and later attended Ames college. He was a fine young man loved by all who knew him and will be sadly missed by his many friends.
