Mrs. Maria Wheeling Shields

Maria Wheeling was born near Xenia, Green county, Ohio, December 27, 1845, and died at her home near Pitzer, Madison county, Iowa, December 2, 1928, aged about 83 years.

When a small child she moved with her parents to Illinois, settling near Monmouth. She was married to Mr. Creed W. Shields on February 6, 1863. God blessed their home with two children, William Van Buren Shields, who has made home for his mother during her widowhood, and Eva (Mrs. Estel). The husband died in March 22, 1909. The daughter, Mrs. Estel, in 1916.

Besides the son, William, four grand children survive, Mr. Ed Estel, Mr. Ray Estel, Mr. Creed Estel and Mrs. Verdie Wilcox. There are seven great grandchildren.

The funeral was held from the M. E. church at Webster at two o’clock Monday afternoon. Rev. W. C. Porter pastor of the Pitzer United Presbyterian church preached the sermon. Burial was made in the Webster cemetery beside the husband.
