Dies At His Home In Pennsylvania – Grew Up In Winterset – Worked On The Sun – Was Associated With Pennsylvania Railroad Many Years
Edward K. Stiffler, former Winterset man, died at his home in Altoona, Pennsylvania, Wednesday, May 16. He suffered a stroke of paralysis nearly a year ago and later submitted to an operation. Since then he had been confined to his home; he was 79 years old.
Edward Stiffler was born in Duncansville, Pennsylvania and came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Stiffler, in 1852 to Morning Sun in Louisa county. In 1856 the family came to Madison county, settling on the farm west of Buffalo now owned by J. M. Robbins. Before and during the Civil war, John Stiffler operated the Ohio House Hotel, opposite the present city library.
Edward grew up in Winterset and was office boy, the devil of the Winterset Sun which in a year or two became The Winterset News. He went to Pennsylvania when a young man, was married there and became a valued and trusted employee of the Pennsylvania Railroad. He was placed on the Pennsylvania’s pension list in 1920.
Mr. Stiffler was the last of the John Stiffler family. He is survived by his wife and several children. The only Winterset relatives he had are Mrs. Laura Wasson and Mrs. James Young, cousins, and Arthur Goshorn, a nephew.
