Former Prominent Merchant Dies In California Home – In Business Here Many Years
C. W. Eastman, former well-known Winterset business man, died January 18 at his home in Escondido, California. He had been ill several years and most of the past year had been bedfast.
Coming to Winterset in 1875, Mr. Eastman ad D. G. Ratliff operated a store on the west side of the Square. Later Mr. Eastman moved to the south side of the square, expanding his business until he had three stores, dry goods in the Darnall building, shoes where Woody-Thompson are located and groceries in the building now rented by Nehring Bros. He closed out his shoe and grocery businesses and moved his dry goods stock to the Bevington building now occupied by H. N. Shaw. He sold his business when he moved to California about twenty years ago.
Mrs. Eastman, two daughters, Mrs. Arthur Churchill of Escondido, and Mrs. Russell Cox, of San Marcos; a son Fred Eastman of Portland, Oregon, survive.
