STRUCK BY TRAIN – MRS. HUFFMAN DIES

TRURO WOMAN OUT FOR A WALK. KILLED BY BURLINGTON TRAIN

ACCIDENT OCCURS IN CUT

Stumbles When She Tries to Cross in Front of Engine, Dies in Few Minutes

Mrs. Ida Huffman, of Truro, was ran over by the southbound Burlington passenger he miles south of the town Monday afternoon. She died before the train could back to the town.

Mrs. Hoffman has been in ill health for some time. Her physicians advised her to take long walks and she commenced to do so a day or so before her death. Evidently she left home shortly after dinner Monday walking down the road and starting back home in Truro on the railroad track. The engineer said that when he first saw her she was on the track and when he blew the whistle she started off but for some reason she started back on it. He thought she stumbled and fell just before the engine struck her and knocked her off the track.

The train was stopped in the unconscious woman placed on a stretcher. She died before the train reached Truro. The accident occurred in a cut but Mrs. Hoffman could easily see the train.

Coroner Dr. Fetters who was notified immediately and went to the scene of the accident says that she must have become confused by seeing the train approached her and tried to cross the track in front of it. Some correl-berry branches she had gathered to decorate her home and some corn she had shelled and put in her pocket were scattered along the track. Dr. Fetters did not hold in inquest - believing it unnecessary though he had taken a jury with him when called to Truro.

Mrs. Huffman was the mother of five children, one of the daughters being married. Her husband, is Elmer Hoffman, a well-known carpenter in Truro.
