December 27 1868Death of Rev. J.C. Ewing
The Winterset Madisonian of the 24th inst. comes to us in mourning for the death of Rev. John Campbell Ewing, proprietor of that paper, and a faithful laborer in the Lord's vineyard. In an editorial that papers says: "For eight years he labored on this field during which time he organized the Presbyterian Church at Bloomfield and Unionville, and then after preaching one summer at Oskaloosa, he came to Winterset in 1854, and in the same year organized the Presbyterian Church in this place, with nine members, and for nine years labored efficiently as its pastor.
As a preacher of the gospel he sought the salvation and sanctification of his hearers, presenting the truth in its simplicity and power, relying on the Spirit of God. As a pastor he watched over his people, and labored faithfully in personal conversation. He had been by the bedside of many with counsel, comfort and prayer, with whom he now sleeps in yonder cemetery".
