James Earl Jones was born on May 3, 1889 in Panora to Robert and Sarah Emmalee Mitchell Jones. He was preceded in death by his first wife Edith Mastens, four brothers, Lester, Barthel, Ray and Harry, and a son, Albert Hall.

January 16, 1936 Earl married Matia Hall. They farmed west of Stuart and Pleasanton, later returning to live in south Stuart. He passed away at Madison Manor South in Winterset. He died on November 19, 1972, having attained the age of 83 years, 8 months and 16 days.

Survivors are his wife, Matia, a son, Lloyd Hall of Des Moines, a daughter, Mrs. Darrell Turpen of Newton, two sisters, Mrs. Ollie Betts, of Coon Rapids, and Mae Carver of Rockwell City; a brother, Milo Jones of Rockwell City, and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held Wednesday, November 22, 1972 at 10:30 a.m. from the Link Funeral Home with Rev. Michael Biklen officiating. Music was provided by Robert Lawson, Mrs. James Trowbridge and Mrs. Cyrus Earhart. Floral tributes were cared for by Mrs. Treva Vanlandingham and Mrs. Max Barr. Serving as casket bearers were Donald and Everett Roberts, Lloyd Kunkle, Max Barr, Richard Clark and Owen Egger. Interment services were held in the South Oak Grove Cemetery at Stuart, Iowa.
