DeSoto News and Happenings Reported During the Week

Commits Suicide

This community was shocked Wednesday of last week by the news that John Baker had committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest at his home here. His body was found by his sons, Carroll and Gordon when they returned home from school shortly after 4 p.m. The body was taken to the Fisher Funeral Home in Van Meter where funeral services were held Monday afternoon, March 27. Burial was in a cemetery near Booneville.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie, a few years ago; his father, Daniel Baker and a brother Martin.

He is survived by two sons, Carroll and Gordon of DeSoto; his mother, Mrs. Lizzie Baker of Denver, Colo.; 3 brothers and 8 sisters, Joe Baker and Mrs. Lueta Baker of New York, Mrs. Sarah Parkinson, Mary, Betty, Robert and Curtis of Denver; Mrs. Nellie Prohaska near Earlham; Mrs. Dorothy Marquardt near DeSoto; Mrs. Susie Thomas, near Mingo; Mrs. Madeline Bergman of Adel; many other relatives and friends, who regret his act.
