Another Veteran Gone

The Van Meter Tribune last week contained the notice of the death of Samuel Caldwell of that place. Mr. Caldwell was born in Vermont in 1826 and died March 17th. He enlisted in the Union army in the war of the rebellion and at the battle of Murfreesboro, Dec. 31, 1862, he was shot in the head, the ball striking him on the temple, passing through his head and coming out at the other temple. It was a remarkable fact that he survived this wound although rendered totally blind and never again able to see the flag in the defense of which he sustained so severe a loss. We have known Mr. Caldwell for a good many years and he has long been a valued subscriber to the NEWS. Mr. Caldwell bore his affliction with cheerfulness and through all of these thirty-eight years and over the blindness he was always a patriotic citizen, loving the country he had served. May his ashes rest in peace.

Transcriber’s note: Burial was made in the Union Chapel-Jefferson Township cemetery, rural Madison County, Iowa.
