Harry Gutshall, a pioneer of Dallas county, passed away August 9 at the age of 93 years. He suffered a broken arm in a fall a few days earlier but his death was attributed to a heart ailment. He was born at New Rumley, Ohio, October 7th, 1853. In 1855 he, with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Gutshall and sisters Elizabeth and Ruth, came to Iowa, making the trip in a prairie schooner and a carriage. It took six weeks to reach the new home.

In 1890 he was married to Minnie Baldwin and moved to the farm where he spent the rest of his life. There were four children born to this union. Mrs. Gutshall passed away in December 1919 and one daughter, Mrs. Samuel Hague in February of this year. The remaining children are Mrs. Walter Reese of Des Moines; J. Max Gutshall and Miss Clara Gutshall, both of near Van Meter.

The funeral service for Mr. Gutshall was held at Union Chapel Tuesday morning, conducted by Rev. E. A. Elliott, of Des Moines assisted by Rev. Suckow, the local pastor. Robert Fisher sang “The Lord’s Prayer and “Peace” with Mrs. Kenneth Phillips at the piano. The pallbearers were Fred Trindle, Ralph Jennings, Lloyd Shambaugh, Harold Moore, Irwin Heinz and Garfield Trindle. Mr. Gutshall was laid to rest beside his wife in the Chapel cemetery.
