Page 5, Columns 3 & 4Mr. James E. Goar, was born December 12, 1870, at Kempton, Ind., the son of Eli and Emily Goar.
He was preceeded in death by a twin brother and sister who died in infancy.
Mr. Goar was the first graduate of the Van Meter High School. After graduation at Van Meter he attended Simpson College and Four-C’s business college.
On Nov. 4, 1903 he was united in marriage to Jessie Fletcher of Van Meter. A more devoted marriage has ever existed. Jessie preceded him in death on April 5, 1935.
Mr. Goar operated a mercantile business in Van Meter for several years with his father and the latter was in the banking business in Van Meter.
He has made his home at 1438 East Grand Ave., Des Moines, Iowa continuously since 1903, except for several years immediately following Mrs. Goars death, at which time he lived with his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mrs. Ralph Jennings of Van Meter.
For a number of years after moving to Des Moines he was cashier for the Warfield Pratt-Howell and Co. After retirement and before the death of his beloved wife Jessie, they thoroughly enjoyed motor trips over most of the United States.
In his early years he was a top athlete, having caught many baseball games for the Van Meter town teams. Baseball has been made many of the long hours of waiting easier. He attended many of the home games of the Des Moines ball team.
He was a member of the United Brethren Church in Des Moines. His regular attendance will be greatly missed.
He became ill in January of this year and spent two months in the Des Moines hospitals before returning home.
Two weeks ago he went to Rochester, Minn. and passed away at St. Mary’s Hospital at the age of 88 years, 7 months and 6 days.
