Page 5, Column 3Mrs. Verle C. Mark, 73, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 9 at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines where she had been a patient about three months.
The body was brought to Fishers Undertaking parlor in Van Meter.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in DeSoto on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 12, beginning at 2 o’clock.
She was a long time member of the church and an active worker in the W.S.C.S.
The minister, who officiated was Rev. Harold Vaughn, Robert G. Fisher, soloist, sang two favorite hymns of the deceased, “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Beautiful Isle”, with Elsie Riley, accompanist. The casket bearers were Leonard Austin, John Golightly, Warren James, Archie Dunbar, Earl Mark and James Shediwy. Mrs. John Golightly and Mrs. Bert Dunbar assisted with the flowers.
Interment was at the Oakdale Cemetery in Earlham.
The W.S.C.S. of the church served dinner to the relatives at noon Saturday.
Verle C. Chestnutwood, daughter of Levi and Allie Chestnutwood, was born Oct. 25, 1886, near DeSoto.
She was married to Frank Mark. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary several years ago at their home in DeSoto.
She and her husband spent nine years in California, two years in South Dakota and six years in Illinois and the rest of her life was spent near and in DeSoto.
She is survived by her husband, Frank; three sons, Vaughn of Metamora, Ill., Clarence of Queen City, Mo. and Vernon of Lucas, Iowa; one daughter, Lola Fay Burger of Silver Spring, Maryland; grandchildren and great grandchildren; one brother, Harry Chestnutwood of near DeSoto; many other relatives and friends attended the rites.
