George W. King, son of John V. and Elizabeth King, was born near Adel, in Dallas county, Iowa, November 29, 1859. He grew to manhood in the parental home and in the community where he was born. On September 21, 1887 he was united in marriage with Miss Minnie Harmon. The only child born of this marriage, a daughter, died when three months old and the child’s mother died in 1890.

May 12, 1896 Mr. King was married to Miss Nancy Ann Hockett of Earlham. Seven children were born of this union, six of whom are still living. Mr. King has lived on the farm practically all his life—mostly in Dallas county, eleven years in Missouri, and four years in South Dakota. From there he moved with his family to Earlham 23 years ago where they have continued to live.

Becoming a Christian in early life he has maintained a keen interest in the work and as an active member of the church, for a good many years of Panther Creek United Brethren in Dallas county, then of the Baptist, in Missouri and in South Dakota. And now for several years he has been a member of the Friends church in Earlham, of which his wife was a birthright member. Rather modest and retiring in nature, Mr. King has throughout life devoted his time and energies to his home and family and to local interests.

In poor health for several years he has failed more rapidly since suffering a paralytic stroke about three years ago. He passed away suddenly at his home in Earlham, Thursday, May 7, 1942, age 82 years, five months and eight days.

Two sisters—Mrs. Frances Steinbaugh and Mrs. Jane Coffin have preceded him in death. The oldest son, Earl David, a World war veteran, died in 1929 and Mrs. King died only last December.

He is survived by one brother, Charles of San Pedro, Calif., four sisters, Mrs. Ellen Crouse of Goodland, Kansas, Mrs. Belle Van Cleave and Mrs. Phoebe Ellis, both of Adel; and Mrs. Marilla Hougham of Santa Ana, Calif.; four sons Fred and Steven both of Philippsburg, Montana, Howard of Rapid City, South Dakota, and Kenneth of Earlham; two daughters, Mrs. Esther Taylor, of Pasadena, California; and Mrs. Marilla Bull of Guthrie Center, Iowa. Also 12 grandchildren and many other relatives and a host of friends and acquaintances.
