Herschel Forrest Smith
Dec 21, 1919 – Sept 10, 2002

Herschel Forrest Smith, 82, of Ames, died Tuesday of cancer at Bethany Manor in Story City. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames, with the Rev David Staff officiating. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Herschel Forrest Smith was born Dec. 21, 1919, in Madison County, the son of Emery P. and Ruth E. (Auxier) Smith. He married Ella Bergling March 16, 1944, in Boone. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked for IBM until his retirement in 1981.

Is survived by his wife, two sons, Ronald Smith of Riverside, Ill. and Douglas Smith of Gahanna, Ohio, five grandchildren, one sister, Evon Norris of Tulsa Okla., two half-sisters, Lois Muriel Covey of Ore., and one half brother, Mike Smith of Calif.

He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Memorials may be directed to first Evangelical Free Church of Ames.

Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames is in charge of arrangements.
