Former Winterset Physician Dies Near Alliance. Old Winterset Family.
The following account of the death of Dr. W. K. Miller former Winterset physician is taken from an Alliance, Nebraska, paper:
Dr. W. K. Miller, father of True Miller, and a resident of Alliance since the town was started in 1888, died suddenly Saturday afternoon while visiting at the home of Joe N. Pattison, a nephew, living 6 miles from Gering. Dr. Miller had gone there the week before to spend Christmas with the Pattison family.
The funeral was held at the Methodist Church and burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. The Rev. R. S. True preached the funeral sermon. A large crowd of old friends and neighbors attended the service.
In addition to his son and daughter he is survived by two brothers, Dr. J. B. Miller of Tina, Iowa and Dr. J. M. Miller of New York.
He was born in Illinois, January 19th, 1844. After receiving his elementary education he studied medicine at Rush Medical College, Chicago, and became a general practitioner in Iowa. In the spring of ‘88 he moved to Alliance from Winterset, Iowa and engaged in the practice of medicine in an active way until 1906, when he purchased the old “33” ranch on the Nibrara River near Marsland. His son, True, was associated with them in the ranch business for 10 years, until he returned to Alliance to enter the automobile business with H. P. Coursey.
Dr. Miller was also engaged in the general mercantile business under the firm name of Miller and Crowther, but he did not take an active part of the business, as he was practicing medicine at that time.
He built a fine home now known as the Dwyer property on West Fifth street and made his home there until his wife died in 1901. In recent years he has been making his home with his daughter, Mrs. Charles Matthews, at Marsland, and with his son in Alliance. He has always retained his residence here and voted in the city.
Dr. Miller was a rugged character of strong convictions and he was prominently identified with the progress and development of the city in an early day. He served two terms as county coroner and was active in the political and business life of the community. He was a charter member of the Masonic lodge in Alliance.
The death of Dr. Miller witnesses the passing of one of the beloved family physicians of a former day, who would leave in the middle of the night to ride miles on horseback to administer to humanity. When friends would tell him that he would receive nothing for his services he would reply “ If I don’t get my reward here, I’ll get it hereafter.”
