Gene A. 'Gabby' Barrus

CODY - Funeral services for Gene A. "Gabby" Barrus, 85, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Cody United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Cody.

He died Nov. 20, 1998, at West Park Hospital Long Term Care Center of natural causes. He was born March 28, 1913, in Winterset, Iowa, the son of Hazel and Charles Barrus. He graduated from Winterset High School in 1931.

He made his way to Hardin, Mont., in 1933, where he found work in the Pryor Mountains. During his stay there, he played semi-professional baseball.

After a series of baseball games between Hardin and Cody, the late Milward Simpson invited him to move to Cody and play baseball for a job, room and board. Cody was his home for the rest of his life.

He met Marjorie Lewis in 1935 and they were married July 24, 1936. He held numerous jobs, including tending bar at the famed Log Cabin Bar; as a shipping and inventory clerk for Husky Oil for 32 years; and as a hunting guide with Max Wilde before striking out on his own as a deer and antelope guide. For 20 years, he was the part-time sports director and play-by-play sports announcer for KODI radio station in Cody KPOW in Powell also employed him as a sports announcer for two years. He won several awards in the sports broadcasting field.

In 1977, he retired from Husky Oil, took to the field with his camera, and began writing for outdoor publications. His wildlife and scenery photos won several awards. More than 200 articles written by him appeared in every major outdoor publication.

Survivors include his wife Marj; two sons, Mick and Jim; one daughter-in-law; five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; one brother and three sisters.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters.
