Virginia Phyllis “Kit” Wessel, of Des Moines, passed away on December 17, 2017. Kit, as she was known by her friends was loved for her generosity, for her caring for others, and for always putting the needs and desires of others ahead of her own. She was a lifelong avid reader and loved crossword puzzles. A talented artist, she taught occasional art classes and her oil paintings were publicly displayed. She was also a gifted seamstress.

Kit was active in her church and community and started a school for special needs children like her daughter in Moberly, MO, for which she was recognized by the governor and others. But the most important thing to Kit was her family, around which her life was centered. Nothing pleased her more than cooking a large, delicious meal and being surrounded by family for the feast. Much of that food came from her own bountiful gardens.

She was the caretaker of her aging mother, raised six children, and took an active interest in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren to the end of her life.

Kit was pre-deceased by her husband, Harold R. (Bob) Wessel and will be dearly missed by sons John Wessel of Des Moines, IA; David Wessel of Bonners Ferry, ID; Mark Wessel of Ventura, CA; daughters Terry Lynch, Jerri Meyer, and Jan Wessel of West Des Moines, IA; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
