Truman D. Payne

Truman D. Payne, 78 of Earlham passed away on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 surrounded by family at his home. Visitation will be held from 6-8 P.M. on Thursday, June 6th at the Johnson Family Funeral Home & Crematory in Earlham. Memorial service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, June 7th at the Earlham Church of Christ. Burial will be at the Earlham Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Truman Payne Memorial Fund and sent in care of the funeral home.

Truman was born on September 30, 1940 to Omer and Olive (Wernli) Payne in Earlham, Iowa. He attended a one room country school and later Earlham High School where he graduated with the class of 1958. Following high school he began farming with his father and he also worked at Harris and Sons Construction. On August 1, 1964 he was united in marriage to Cheryl Countryman at the Redfield United Methodist Church. To this union four children were born: Tara, Traci, Eric and Nathan. The family made their home in Earlham.

Truman worked 27 years for Madison County Secondary Roads operating a road grader. He was very skilled at this job and took great pride in his work. He retired in January, 2013. Truman was a member of the Madison County Pork Producers, served on the Earlham City Council and was a Deacon at the Earlham Church of Christ.

Truman loved woodworking, reading western novels and country music. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed watching the NASCAR races. He was a true outdoorsman at heart and loved hiking especially at Goeldner Woods Park where he would usually make two hikes a day. Above all, he treasured time he was able to spend with his children, grandchildren and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents Omer and Olive Payne; brother, Kenneth Omer Payne; brother, Thomas D. Payne; sister, Joan Adolphson; wife, Cheryl Payne; and granddaughter Kara Payne (daughter of Eric and Julie).

Truman leaves behind to celebrate his life: daughter, Tara Aquino of Earlham; daughter, Traci Lendt (Tom) of Des Moines; son, Eric Payne (Julie) of Jewell; son, Nathan Payne (Amanda) Des Moines; seven grandchildren: Seth Aquino, Taylor Aquino, Elyse Payne, Evan Payne, Caleb Payne, Alex Payne and Harlyn Payne; sister, Betty Warren of Carlisle; sister, Virginia Grove of Panora and a host of extended family and friends that will miss him dearly.
