Etta M. Payton, daughter of Benjamin W. and Amanda Richards Payton, was born near DeSoto, Iowa. After being graduated from the DeSoto school she went to Des Moines, where she arose to a place of responsibility in one of the large mercantile establishments.
In 1917 she was married to Edward F. Payton, formerly of DeSoto. For the last thirteen years she has resided in North Dakota. On Saturday, June 7th she was suddenly stricken with illness. She was removed to St. Luke’s hospital, Aberdeen, South Dakota, where she was operated on and passed away the following Friday, June 13th at 7:45 a.m.
A service was held in the home of her cousin, Mrs. Earl W. Ackert in Ellendale, N.D. on Monday, June 16. The body was brought to Adel, Iowa, and on Tuesday, June 17 services were held in the Fairview Methodist Episcopal church in charge of the Rev. W. P. Fink of Hedrick.
A quartet composed of R. Leo Phillips, Mrs. Harry T. Pearn, Mrs. John L. England and Dwight England, accompanied by Mrs. Roy A. Clayton gave two selections. The pall bearers were Holland Mitchell, Walter L. Clayton, Edward Trester, Lloyd Mitchell, Roy Payton and Truman Mitchell. Wahnita Trindle and Marilla Fink assisted with the floral decorations.
The body of Mrs. Payton was accompanied from Ellendale by her husband, Edward F. Payton, her brother, the Rev. Jacob S. Payton of Pittsburg, Pa., and her cousin, Mrs. Earl W. Ackert of Ellendale.
There were also here for the service her sister, Mrs. H. C. Callett of Los Angeles, California, her brother and wife Mr. and Mrs. Jesse G. Payton of Chickask, Oklahoma, and Lucias Callett of Beverly Hills, California. Mrs. Payton is also survived by a sister, Mrs. B. W. Tucker, of Calcutta, India.
________________________Coordinator's note: Although her gravestone has "1870" as her year of birth, the 1880, 1885, and 1895 censuses all support a year of birth of 1873 or 1874. The 1900 Federal Census says "March 1876".
