Edward C. Schreiber, 74 Years Old, Dies After Illness of a Few Days.
RESIDED HERE SINCE ‘76
Lived in Pleasant Valley Township Many Years—Eight Sons and Daughters Survive.
Edward Charles Schreiber died at St. Anthony hospital Friday morning, April 7, after an illness of a few days, although he had been in failing health for two years, and all winter was in a feeble condition. He was up and around, however, until a few days before his death and was taken to St Anthony hospital April 2, where everything was done to prolong his life.
Mr. Schreiber was born near German Valley, Ill., May 28, 1848. He was the son of Jacob and Katherine Schreiber and was one of ten children. His marriage to Miss Marcella A. Harris took place February 27, 1868. They moved to Madison county the same year and came to Carroll county in the spring of 1876, settling in Pleasant Valley township.
In 1909 they retired from the farm and moved into Glidden. Three years later they moved to Carroll. Since the death of his wife, August 13, 1921, he has made his home with his two daughters, Mrs. George Maze of Carroll, and Mrs. Baden of Lake City.
Ten children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Schreiber, one son dying in infancy. A daughter, Mrs. Laura Dankle, died September 9, 1920. The surviving children are Mary McCurdy, of Cartersville, Mont.; Jane Siediff, of Valley Junction; Effie Vaughn, of Coon Rapids; Dora Maze, of Carroll, Fred Schreiber, of Spirit Lake; Dollie Baden, of Lake City; Maude Hill, of Aurora, S. D., and Ruby Baden of Pharr, Texas. Besides the children there are 32 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. One sister, Mrs. Jacob Melter, of Freeport, Ill., is the only surviving member of the family.
Mr. Schreiber united with the U. B. church 35 years ago and remained a member to the time of his death. He was one of the early pioneers who helped break the virgin soil and also experienced hardships of the early pioneer. All the children were present at the funeral with the exception of Mrs. Ruby Baden, of Texas. The grandsons acted as pall bearers.
