Kathryn A. Algreen, 67, died Jan. 5, 2019.

A future celebration of life is being planned for early summer. More information will be published here, in the Madisonian later this spring. In lieu of flowers or cards, please consider a contribution to the Friends of the Earlham Public Library.

Kathryn Ann Algreen was born Jan. 10, 1951, at Winterset Memorial Hospital to Donald Vern Algreen and Irma Lucille (Gilbert) Algreen. She graduated from Earlham High School in 1969 and attended some college at Northwest Missouri State University. She received her Licensed Practical Nurse accreditation and throughout her life spent much of her career in various parts of the medical field.

Kathryn was fond of the phrase “All who wander are not lost” and spent much of her life outside of Iowa in places like Idaho, California, Texas, Florida, Colorado, and most recently Arizona-though both of her children were born in Iowa, and she raised them in Earlham and Winterset. Kathryn imparted a tremendous sense of curiosity and a passion for life in her children who both attended university, one on the east coast in Massachusetts and one on the west coast in California. With her children flung far across the country she chose to relocate to be nearer them and her grandchildren, rotating every few years to spend time with the youngest born.

Kathryn was an avid reader and player of charades and trivial pursuit. She had a passion for classic rock and loved to go for walks with her headphones. Kathryn had a fantastic sense of humor and an infectious laugh that inspired many joyful moments at the frequent gatherings and parties she hosted with her community of friends. Kathryn was not one to over-correspond by phone, letter, or email, but nevertheless she created deep, loving, and lasting relationships with her friends and family.

Kathryn was a very good artist and produced many landscape and still life paintings that include common themes like Madison County’s covered bridges, barns, old farmhouses, birds, and flowers. Recently she had taken to painting again after many years off and produced some wonderful works sure to be cherished. Kathryn also had a thirst for knowledge and enjoyed meteor showers and other natural wonders. Recently, after a drive in Tucson, she shared with her loved ones a moment of delightful wonder at the captivating beauty and grandeur of her beloved Sonoran Desert and Catalina Mountains in Arizona.

Surviving are son, Paul Donald Algreen of Boulder, Colo., and his wife, Michele and grandson, Casey; daughter Holly (Algreen) McDaniel and her husband, John McDaniel of Austin, Texas and grandchildren Olive, Morgan and Thane.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Michael Algreen and Jimmy Lee Algreen.
