BG (Ret) John A. Tymeson, 73, of Ogden, went to the arms of his Lord at home surrounded by family on January 2, 2019.
General Tymeson was born September 19, 1945 in Storm Lake, Iowa to his parents F. Aiken and Helen M. Tymeson. He graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1964 and Buena Vista University in 1972.
General Tymeson enlisted in the United States Army in June 1967, attended Rotary Wing Flight School, and served in the 247th Medical Detachment as a “Dustoff” medevac helicopter pilot in Vietnam 1968-69. For his service in Vietnam, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart, Air Medal with V device, and 18 Air Medals. During his 34 years of military service, he received many additional awards and decorations, including two awards of the Legion of Merit. General Tymeson joined the Iowa Army National Guard in 1971 and later began working full-time for the Guard as an instructor pilot. He served as a Company Commander, Battalion Commander, Flight Facility Commander, State Aviation Officer, Chief of Staff, and Deputy Adjutant General.
John, fondly known as JT by his family and friends, was a member of many veteran service organizations, to include the Distinguished Flying Cross Society, Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association, DAV, VFW, American Legion, and served as the Iowa Department Commander for the Military Order of the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Elks, First Presbyterian Church, served on the Board of Directors for the Iowa Gold Star Military Museum, and served 16 years on the Board of Directors for the Food Bank of Iowa, serving as Chair for several years.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 37 years, Jodi of Ogden, Daughters Erin (Jason) Loschinskey of Great Falls, Montana and Amanda (Damien) Lipke of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, grandson John ”Jack” Lipke, and step-grandsons AJ and Ben Loschinskey. John is also survived by his sister Sara (James) Gailey of Newell, Iowa, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be held at Schroeder-Stark-Welin Funeral Home, 609 7th Street, Boone, Iowa on Sunday, January 6, 2019 with the family present from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 703 Greene Street, Boone, Iowa on Monday, January 7, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. Interment with full military honors will be at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery on Monday at 12:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Mary Greeley Hospice or First Presbyterian Church. The family wishes to extend sincere appreciation to all the wonderful professionals at the Mary Greeley Hospice and the William Bliss Cancer Center at Mary Greeley Medical Center.
